According to , United chose to activate the automatic one year extension to Lindelof's contract in order to prevent the defender from being able to talk to foreign clubs about a possible Bosman move in the summer. Erik ten Hag sees the 29-year-old as an important part of his defence at Old Trafford and retaining his services was deemed crucial.

United have struggled with injury problems in the heart of their defence and will feel they have had to rely on the services of 35-year-old Jonny Evans probably one too many times this campaign. With Raphael Varane likely to depart before next season, retaining Lindelof maintains some stability.
