Newcastle are in the market for a fourth player this January and it’s been revealed that the man in question could be Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.
What’s been said?
Danny Rose is set to become the club’s third acquisition of the January window after the Magpies and Spurs agreed a loan deal for the player on Wednesday night.
However, with that news still very much fresh, a forward is back in the minds of those in the north-east as they monitor the situation of 6 foot 4 striker, Giroud.
Journalist Lee Ryder took to Twitter to reveal the story, hinting that Newcastle and Lazio may be about to battle it out ahead of the deadline on Friday night.
A risk worth taking
With Newcastle lacking firepower this season, signing a player who is yet to score all campaign would be an almighty risk.
Giroud hasn’t found the net for his club side and with Joelinton only netting twice since his arrival last summer, it doesn’t particularly bode well for the Toon Army.
On top of that, Yoshinori Muto, Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll have scored a total of zero between them in 2019/20.
However, the Frenchman is a proven forward in the Premier League and in fact, he has eight goals in just six outings against Newcastle.
It appears as though the experienced centre-forward loves playing against them, also racking up a further two assists in matches versus the Geordie outfit.
Is life under Ashley really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, Newcastle fans…
There would be question marks around his profile, given the 33-year-old is similar in stature to both Joelinton and Carroll, but he is one of the best hold-up players around – something that was evident when France chose him to lead the line during their World Cup triumph in 2018.
Eden Hazard previously claimed he was the best at this in the world as well, so it’s clear to see he could benefit a Newcastle side who lack possession – averaging 39.1% so far this term.
With a player like Giroud, he could help Steve Bruce get the best out of his system.
In other news, Newcastle have been credited with interest in a further striker…
